Frequently asked questions
Do Quebec residents file two returns?
Yes. Quebec residents file a federal return (Definition: T1 The federal personal income tax return, filed with the Canada Revenue Agency. See the glossary) with the Canada Revenue Agency and a provincial return (Definition: TP-1 The Quebec personal income tax return, filed with Revenu Québec. See the glossary) with Revenu Québec. We prepare and file both.
Can my spouse and I file together?
Each person files their own return, but some credits can be shared or transferred between spouses: medical expenses, donations, pension income splitting. Preparing both returns at the same time lets us optimize the household as a whole.
What happens if I file late?
If you owe a balance, penalties and interest can apply after the deadline. If you’re expecting a refund, filing late also delays your credits and benefits, such as the Definition: GST Goods and Services Tax, federal (5%). See the glossary credit and the Canada Child Benefit.
